Aussie Pairs Competition 2025
Eric Wood Memorial Trophy 2025
The biggest event in our club's calendar took place on Saturday 9th August. The Eric Wood Memorial Trophy sponsored by J.B. Motors of Malton is a 'round robin, whistlestop' event with a total of 12 teams playing 5 games of 50 minutes each. In dry weather, but with difficult and challenging winds, all the entrants struggled through to the end and after 5 fiercely contested rounds the winners were the Kirkbymoorside trio of Alec Young, Betty Turnbull and Malcolm Richardson with a points total of 8pt (+25 Shots). Second place also on 8pts (+19) was the Settrington team skipped by Anthony Crosier, while third place went to John Breckon's team from Sheriff Hutton with 6pts (+18).
Stuart Carruthers (representing our sponsor) presented the trophy and prize money, while his wife Yvonne donated a raffle prize of return tickets for two between any 2 stations on the LNER London to Edingburgh line. That prize was won by Cliff Smedley of Stillington BC. A short slideshow of photo's taken throughout the day can be found here
playlist of videos is also available for viewing here on our YouTube channel where all our media content can be found.

Kirkbymoorside BC held their annual Aussie
Pairs Competition on Sunday 1st June. With a total of 30 teams taking part, the event was well attended. Malton fielded two teams (Colin Smith & Ian Strangeway and Graham Fortser & Stuart Metcalfe). Each team played a total of 5 games with 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. The winner would be the team with the highest total after the 5 games using shots difference if need to decide the winner. Colin & Ian finished in 7th place while Graham & Stuart finished in 5th which qualified them for a cash prize. Thank you Kirkbymoorside for a well attended and well organised event, a day thoroughly enjoyed by all. We look forward to next years event. A short video of the Malton teams can be see Here.
Andre Davis Whistlestop Triples 2025

The annual 'Andre Davis Whistelestop Triples Competition' hosted by Stillington BC was held on Sat 12th July and once again, as usual, was very well attended with 14 teams taking part including 2 teams from Malton. Team 1 was the trio of Colin Smith (Skip), Ian Strangeway (2nd wood) and Stuart Metcalfe (lead wood). Team 2 consisted of David Raines (Skip), Derek Harper (2nd wood), and Shirley Scott (lead wood). The format required each team to play a total of 6 games with 2 points on offer for the winners and 1 point for a tied match.
After 5 rounds of matches Colin's team were unbeaten and leading the competition with a total of 10 points. With 3 other teams just 2 points behind them, all that they had to do was avoid defeat to win. But, in the final round of matches, after 5 ends they trailed to Freddie Alnutt's (Huby) team by 3 shots. With the Malton trio holding 2 shots (right on the edge of the green) it was down to the 2 skips to decide the outcome of the match. With Freddie going extremely close to finding the jack and sending a 'Malton counter' into the ditch it was down to Colin to bowl the very last wood of the end, needing to add one more shot to gain a point for the draw and fortunately he managed to draw the third shot required. It was a great result for the trio and gave them 11 points from a possible 12 to win the tournament by 1 point. A short slideshow can be viewed here.
Malton Win The Inaugural Ken Piercy KO Cup
On Thursday 28th August Malton played Stillington in the inaugural final of the Ken Piercy KO Cup competition. The final, held at Huby, was reduced to 16 ends due to light & weather conditions. After 14 ends of a very tight and competitive game Stillington held a 3 shot advantage, leading by 53 shots to 50. But, in the final 2 ends Malton outscored Stillington by 18 shots to 1 and ran out 68-54 winners. The winners trophy was presented to our Huby team captain Ian Strangeway by John Piercy.
The competition was created in memory of John's brother and Huby player Ken Piercy who sadly passed away and Malton considered it an honour to take part in the very first holding of the competition.
Thanks go to Huby for introducing the event into the calendar and for hosting the final and for providing refreshments after the game.
Thank you also to Stillington for proving to be worthy opponents and for playing the game in a friendly but competitive spirit.
Well done Colin, Ian & Stuart.
